Why do I ask for dāna?

Dāna is the Pāli word for generosity, the act of giving.  Generosity is the foundation of all other virtues and it is the first basis of merit across all Buddhist traditions and lineages.

As a full-time Buddhist anagārika, I have given up almost all worldly possessions and responsibilities so that I may dedicate the entirety of my life to Buddhist study, training, practice, and meditation — and, until I am fully ordained as a monk, to the tutelage and coaching of happiness and resilience to those who approach me for training.

Without dāna it would not be possible for me to continue to be able to provide my teachings and compassionate support pro bono to those who are less fortunate or who have little to call their own except for their practice.

Please see the section below entitled "Requesting Access to the Pro Bono Student Program" to understand the importance of donations made to this website and how it means so much to others.

What I provide to our student community goes far beyond the scope and depth of common Buddhist/Dharma Coaching and aligns much more closely with professional Buddhist Psychology and Advanced Buddhist Path-Fruition Training. I also offer personal coaching and counselling to those who aren't specifically on a Buddhist path, but still wish to benefit from being able to cultivate the richness of genuine mindfulness in their lives.

I encourage those who have an income to contribute to our student community before each session for the value that they receive from my time, energy, and dedication to improve and hone their spiritual understanding and deepen and improve their daily practice; and, also for the counselling and support that I offer by providing highly-personalised instruction and guidance on how to practically apply the Dharma to their real-life problems and difficulties that stand in the way of their progress in ways that not many other teachers can.

 — A special note for potential advanced students —

What I offer is very special, there are very few people who can genuinely offer what I do:
My specialty is working with advanced practitioners who are close to Awakening, but need help to attain it. I also work with those who are already partially-enlightened, but need an experienced teacher to make continued progress along the Path toward full enlightenment.

Very few people available have the direct experience and the highly-niche and specialised
advanced skills that I do; thus this kind of coaching is very rare indeed.

Requesting Access to the Pro Bono Student Program

Money should never come in-between a practitioner and his/her teacher, so those who cannot bear the burden of providing the suggested donation amounts above are welcome to submit a request for "pro bono student" status.

Once approved,
pro bono students are welcome to donate as much or as little as they are comfortable and happy to provide for the time, energy, and value that they receive from our time together for a period of four (4) months.

  • Please note that "pro bono" does not mean "free," rather, it means that someone else is providing for you.  Pro bono training would not be possible if not for the generosity of other students and clients who help me cover my medical, shelter, and food expenses.

  • Scheduling priority is given to students who can donate at the "all other students" tier and then to students who can donate at the "sliding-scale" tier.  This is because without these donors pro bono training would not be possible.

  • Pro bono students are rotated out after a period of four months in order to make room for those who are on the waiting list to be cycled into the programme.

  • As a pro bono student, please remember that someone else is providing for me, and in return I get to provide for you; this is done with the intention that someday you can and will provide for others who are in need of your help and generosity.

  • It's worth noting that at any given time, I try to ensure that about 50% to 60% of my student population are pro bono students and another 25% or so are sliding-scale students — this means that 5 out of every 6 students (85% of my student population) are funded by 1 out of every 6 students (15% of my student population), that is to say, by those who donate at the regular tier level — it's one of the many ways that I provide for others, just as others provide for me, but space is limited as demand for pro bono time is unsurprisingly high so there is a waitlist for pro bono students; please email me to be placed on the waitlist today.

New Student Session Frequency

It is important to know that ideally new students should plan to have weekly sessions with me for the first eight (8) weeks.

Two weeks (or more) between initial sessions is just too long a period of time when we are starting to ramp up — too much can happen in that amount of time and too much of what we discuss can be lost.
There is a lot that I also need to learn about you, your afflictions, your habit-energies, your views, your practices, et cetera before we can start having greater time between sessions.  If we don't maintain a steady cadence of initial sessions, momentum will erode, new teachings won't be properly reinforced and contemplated, corrective habits won't take root to be formed-and-solidified, and much of our effort will be forfeited, slowing down your progress, impeding my ability to help you.

If you cannot manage weekly sessions for the first two months, let's have that conversation and figure out the best way to get ahead of some of these concerns in order to mitigate and diminish the impact on your ability to make the progress that you hope to experience by having me as your teacher.

Donation Re-direction Disclosure

An appropriately ample portion of dāna-received goes directly toward my own personal efforts to take care of others; to help clothe, feed, and protect those who are in poverty, those who are homeless, and those who are destitute and veritably suffering immensely; and, especially to those who are clearly in genuine need of someone who will recognise their humanity and are in need of my concern, my support, and my compassion.  I am deeply committed to a mentality of actively helping others in need.

Not a Student But Still Want to Support This Endeavour?

If you are not part of our student community, but would simply like to volunteer or make a donation to help support me or what I am doing here, your generosity will directly serve to sustain the work that I do to guide others who are in genuine need of compassion, guidance, and care to be free of their suffering or to attain spiritual success; your support and kindness will not go unnoticed and would be greatly and sincerely appreciated.

I am entirely donation-funded, please consider making a donation to our student community today.

Since leaving to become a full-time Buddhist anagārika, donations directly make our student community possible.  Without your generosity, it would not be possible to provide teachings and training to guide those who wish to attain spiritual success, or to those, both living and dying, who are in genuine need of my support, compassion, and care.

Thank you very much for your kindness and your generosity.
