Why do I ask for dāna?

Dāna is the Pāḷi word for generosity, embodying the beautiful act of giving. It serves as the foundation for all other virtues and stands as the essential first step toward merit in all Buddhist traditions and lineages.

As a compassionate coach and therapist, I’m here to guide and support individuals on their unique spiritual and personal journeys. It’s important to recognise that this is not just my passion but also my profession and livelihood. Like other dedicated professionals in the coaching and therapy fields, I earn my living through the expertise and time I share with each student and client. Through dāna, I am able to offer support and guidance to those eager to enhance their lives by working with me.

Without the practice of dāna, it would not be possible for me to provide my time to those who approach me for guidance or to offer pro bono support to those who are less fortunate or who have little to call their own except for their practice.

Please see the section below, entitled "How the Pro Bono Student Program Works," to understand the importance of donations made to this website and how they mean so much to others.

What I provide to our student community goes far beyond the scope and depth of common Buddhist Dharma coaching, aligning much more closely with professional coaching, Buddhist psychology, and advanced Buddhist path-fruition training. I also offer personal and professional happiness coaching to those on a Buddhist path who struggle to experience the benefits of cultivating genuine peace, presence, and mindfulness in their day-to-day lives.

I encourage those who have an income to contribute to our student community before each session for the value that they receive from my time, energy, and dedication to improve and hone their spiritual understanding and deepen and improve their daily practice; and also for the direction and support that I offer by providing highly-personalised instruction and guidance on how to practically apply the Dharma to their real-life problems and difficulties that stand in the way of their progress in ways that not many other teachers can.

Your understanding and respect for this are greatly appreciated.

(these sessions are 1-on-1, personalised discussion time with michael turner)

If you don't have a teacher, you are not only limiting the speed of your progress but also the distance of it.  Additionally, if you don't have a qualified teacher, it's unlikely that you're learning real Buddhism... not having a teacher can really hold you back.

 — A special note for prospective advanced  students —

While I work with students of all levels and experience, what I offer is nonetheless very special, and there are very few people who can genuinely offer what I do:

My unique differentiator is my uncommon ability to work with advanced practitioners who are close to awakening, but need experienced mentoring to attain it. I also work with those who are already partially-enlightened, but need an experienced mentor to make continued progress along the Path toward full enlightenment.

Extremely few people available as teachers have the direct experience and the highly niche and specialised advanced skills that I do; thus, this kind of mentoring is exceedingly rare, and I cannot take on all prospective students who approach me for tutelage.

Read my student reviews, my advanced teaching manifesto, or more about my background.

Nevertheless, I welcome dedicated students, from beginners to advanced.

How the Pro Bono Buddhist Student Program Works

Money should never come between a practitioner and their teacher. Therefore, those who cannot bear the burden of providing the suggested donation or sliding scale amounts above are welcome to submit a request for "pro bono student" status.

Once approved,
pro bono students are welcome to donate as much or as little as they are comfortable and happy to provide, in consideration of the time, energy, and value they receive from our time together, for a period of four (4) months.

  • Please note that "pro bono" does not mean "free," rather, it means that someone else is providing for you.  Pro bono training would not be possible without the generosity of other students and clients who help me cover my medical, shelter, and food expenses.
  • Scheduling priority is given to clients who donate at the standard level, followed by clients who donate at the sliding scale tier.  This is because without these donors, pro bono training would not be possible.
  • Pro bono students are rotated out after four months to make room for those who are on the waiting list to be cycled into the program.
  • As a pro bono student, please remember that someone else is providing for me, and in return, I get to provide for you; this is done with the intention that someday you can and will provide for others who are in need of your help and generosity.
  • It's worth noting that at any given time, I try to ensure that about 60% of my student population are pro bono students and another 25% or so are sliding scale students— it's one of the many ways that I provide for others, just as others provide for me, but space is limited as demand for pro bono time is unsurprisingly high so there is a constant waitlist for pro bono students; please email me to be placed on the waitlist today.

New Student/Client Session Frequency

It is important to know that new students are asked to commit to having weekly sessions with me for eight (8) weeks.

Two weeks (or more) between initial sessions is just too long a period of time when we are starting to ramp up — too much can happen in that amount of time, and too much of what we discuss can be lost.
There is a lot that I also need to learn about you, including your afflictions, habit energies, views, practices, and so on, before we can spend more time between sessions.  If we don't maintain a steady cadence of initial sessions, momentum will erode, new teachings won't be properly reinforced and contemplated, corrective habits won't take root to be formed-and-solidified, and much of our effort will be forfeited, slowing down your progress, impeding my ability to help you.

If you cannot manage weekly sessions for the first two months, let's have that conversation and figure out the best way to get ahead of some of these concerns in order to mitigate and diminish the impact on your ability to make the progress that you hope to experience by having me as your teacher.

Donation Re-direction Disclosure

An appropriately ample portion of dāna-received goes directly toward my own personal commitment to take care of others; to help clothe, feed, and protect those who are in poverty, those who are homeless, and those who are destitute and veritably suffering immensely.  Especially to those who are clearly in genuine need of someone who will recognise their humanity and are in need of my concern, my support, and my compassion.

I am deeply committed to a mentality of actively helping others in need.
