"Finding Michael and engaging with his teaching has been nothing less than a turning point in my Buddhist practice and in my life. I had assumed that my over a decade of practice was attuned to what I thought of as the core elements of the Buddhist path, i.e., getting calm and concentrated in meditation and maybe throw in a perspective of Anatta to gain insights. I’d hear all this stuff about sīla in Dhamma talks, thinking that as long as I’m not out there stealing or murdering, I’ve got this virtue business all covered. Moreover, I’ve been a vegan for 20 years, and I don’t even drink alcohol or smoke cannabis, so everything’s absolved, right? For some reason, however, I just wasn’t getting the big insights I’d assumed would come soon enough.
Reading Michael’s blog and having discussions with him made me realize just how skewed this very common idea of Buddhist practice unfortunately really is. Doubling down on meditation and mindfulness while ignoring the other factors of the Noble Eightfold Path is not a complete path, nor does it bring the benefits of one. What I really appreciate in Michael is his ability to see my shortcomings much better than I ever could and course-correct my practice, so that it’s better aligned with the teachings of Buddhism. Michael is a very compassionate, intelligent, wise, and skilled teacher – adjectives that I don’t use lightly. It is evident that he is very knowledgeable of the early Buddhist texts and the suttas, but he is also very well-read in the other Buddhist traditions, and he is able to utilize these different perspectives in his teachings to balance the practice of wayward students such as myself. Even during the first few months that we met regularly, my practice took a whole new turn. I’ve become more patient, contented, happy, and compassionate, and even my family has noticed the difference. I no longer blame the circumstances for hampering my meditation, but try and engage with life's circumstances as the Path itself. Of all the teachers I’ve had the honor to meet, mostly in meditation retreats, Michael is in a class of his own; he doesn’t teach meditation so much as the entirety of the Buddhist path. His teaching reflects not only a deep understanding of the suttas, but more importantly, it comes from a place of personal understanding and direct knowledge. Working with Michael has literally been the best thing that's happened to my practice. If you’re a serious practitioner, don’t pass by this opportunity." - Anton S., Doctoral Researcher in Sociology |

"If you are reading this review, then you have incredibly good kamma. Your kamma has led you to an incredible teacher, a diamond in the rough of Dhamma teachers. Please take heed of this opportunity, for it is impermanent.
It is nearly impossible to find a teacher who:
Unless you are exceptionally gifted, it is exceedingly difficult to make attainment-level progress (stream-entry and beyond) on the Buddha's path without a noble teacher. The predicament that most serious practitioners face is that they cannot find a teacher who meets the above criteria. There are thousands of meditation and Dhamma teachers, but those who teach the Buddha's Dhamma and have achieved path-level attainments are nearly impossible to find. Most have donned the monk's robes and are hidden away in forest monasteries. But even if you seek them out, these wise people are busy with monastic duties and their own practice. They typically don't spend much of their time in lengthy one-on-one sessions, especially with lay people. They're not going to get to know you well enough to give you tailored and deeply personal guidance. And although they may be wise, they may not be skilled teachers. Upāsaka Michael possesses all of these qualities. He is overflowing with compassion and wisdom. My progress toward realizing that wisdom and compassion in myself has been remarkable. Without Michael I would still be running in place, marinating in my Dukkha and self-centered views. Before working with Michael I had been practising the Buddha's teachings for several years, and although I made progress over that time period, I still felt like I hadn't truly penetrated the teachings and realized a measurable increase in happiness. In other words, I felt stuck and stagnant in my practice. From the first few sessions Michael was quickly able to identify my weaknesses and give me actionable strategies to work with them. He gave me resources to study and contemplate outside of our sessions that would deepen and broaden my understanding. He taught me the right way to study, meditate, and practice so that I could make real progress toward deep happiness. In hindsight, I now realize that despite many thousands of hours of meditation and study I had not been practising properly... I hadn't let the Dhamma permeate into my whole life. The most important thing Michael has taught me is how to practice, how to properly engage with these life-changing teachings. He has not only equipped me with the tools to practice rigorously and effectively, but also helped me to identify which tools would be most skillful for the situations I encounter in my daily life. His ability to tailor teachings to each student has made each session and each teaching incredibly beneficial. I can't think of a single example of a teaching that was not deeply relevant to my current situation. Michael lives the path in every moment. From our first encounter it was apparent that he has attained a high degree of wisdom and that he embodies all of his teachings. Every utterance comes from decades of deep practice and contemplation. I feel incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity to work with Michael and benefit from his wisdom. I recommend Upāsaka Michael for anyone interested in making real progress toward happiness. Please have a conversation with him to see if you would be a good fit to work together. May your ascension to the truth be swift." - Lucas Morissette, Client Success Consultant |

"I had been searching for a Buddhist coach/mentor and nothing quite resonated -- until I connected with him.
Working with Michael has been a gift. He taught me the foundations of Buddhist philosophy in a way that’s accessible and practical. Analytical meditation gave me a clear framework to examine the dharma. It helped me reflect on my thoughts and emotions in relation to the Buddhist teachings. Quiet meditation trained me to rest and reset. The result is real: less overwhelm, more compassion, clearer choices, healthier boundaries, and a daily practice I can sustain. The calm doesn’t end when the session ends; it shows up at work, with my kids, and in how I move through hard moments. His presence is calm and grounded, his questions are kind and incisive, and his teaching style, which is tailored to my Myers-Briggs MBTI personality type (INFJ), is practical in the best way: simple, portable practices I can use on the hardest days. He blends business acumen, a keen understanding of people, and deep Buddhist study to curate a practical, personalized practice map for me, one that fits my life, my goals, and my bandwidth. He’s helped me navigate some of the most challenging seasons of my life: a high-conflict divorce and custody proceedings after domestic abuse, the weight of grief, single-parenting realities, and rebuilding a new life with clarity and compassion. In each session, he offers clear frameworks and gentle accountability; and, short mettā phrases, mindful pauses, and doable “in-the-moment” resets that help me meet fear and uncertainty with courage and care. I leave our work feeling steadier, more spacious, and more grateful despite difficulties in my life. What stands out most is Michael’s pure presence and compassion while meeting me exactly where I am. If you’re navigating change, healing, or simply want a clearer, kinder relationship with yourself, I can’t recommend Michael Turner highly enough." - Joanne L., Registered Nurse "Dear Michael,
I have worked with so many teachers and coaches throughout my life. Yet your presence - your whole presence - during our sessions is unmatched. Thank you for being an anchor in my spiritual journey in Buddhism. In a very challenging season of my life, your compassionate guidance helped me return to breath, to body, and to the simple kindness of this moment. Your individualized, curated mentorship was instrumental in my growth and has given me a strong foundation in my Buddhist practice; one I specifically lean on daily. I often hear your reminders about wise compassion, right effort, and gentleness toward myself. They continue to shape how I meet fear, grief, and change. Please know your teaching lives on in the way I mother my kids, speak to myself, and choose my next steps. I miss our weekly sessions. I hope our paths cross again when the time is right. Sending you well wishes and a quiet bow of gratitude. With metta," - Joanne L., Registered Nurse |

"It's possible, like me, you have stumbled upon this small corner of the internet after having seen positive results from your meditation practice, but are unable to shake the feeling that there is something you are missing. You perhaps have met well-respected teachers, listen to countless Dhamma talks, read the suttas, and maintain a solid meditation practice--and yet you still find yourself regularly having bad days or being outraged and frustrated over the same mundane daily life stuff.
I invite you to read Michael's blog posts and begin questioning some of the widespread assumptions around meditation and especially the belief that one day piercing insights will spontaneously arise of their own accord from deep states of meditation. You will find that what Michael teaches is rare, subtle and based on deep and personal understanding, not just intellect. He offers an invaluable form of personalized course correction that is rigorously grounded in the early Buddhist texts and skillfully informed by the diverse Buddhist traditions of this day. After having worked with Michael for a relatively short amount of time, I saw a real difference in how I moved around in the world. My mind started to incline itself toward positive states. I actually genuinely feel happier, more joyful and more compassionate, which is reflected in body, speech and mind. I actually have fewer bad days! I began to see triggers as opportunities to practice, and developed a friendly attitude toward the people and situations that used to get under my skin. It is astounding to see the mind transform suffering, and to know through personal experience that the mind can be trained and changed. It is with deep gratitude for Michael's guidance that I write this review. We know the path is a long one. It is not easy even with a qualified teacher. Ensure your time is not wasted. May you develop true happiness and joy in this lifetime. May you find firm, unshakable footing on the Noble Eightfold Path in this very life." C. Tsui, Cataloger, Art & Design |

"Michael is a extraordinary human being. I've never met anyone like him and he is an amazing teacher.
I met Anagarika Michael Turner years ago as part of a Sravasti Abbey Monastery three month dharma program. I got to know him and I found myself looking forward to our interactions. I connected with his ability to interpret the dharma in ways that I never heard before. Like really useful ways that really helped my understanding of the teachings come together. I got caught up with so many concepts but he really help me to understand them in ways that makes so much sense. With his help I now understand concepts I spent so much effort trying to get before and have now put them into my practice. Also he showed me how to use the dharma teachings in my meditations, which changed everything really. His guidance and knowledge go far beyond just meditation and buddhism. I found that helpful as his insight on how to apply the teaching to my every day life was direct and surprisingly on point and helped me navigate some significant difficulties that I had been experiencing in my marriage and at work. My life, my practice and my understanding of the dharma have come a long way since meeting Michael, and I am grateful for the impact he has had on my life. I recommend him." - Veronica T., Pediatrician |

"I've never had a teacher or met another person like Anagarika Michael. He is really soft, kind, knowledgeable, and insightful. He understands the dhamma better than anyone else I've ever met and there hasn't been a single question that I have asked in the dozens and dozens of hours that we have spent together so far that he hasn't been able to answer with deep insight and clarity to help me better understand these very complicated concepts that make up Buddhism.
It's not an exaggeration to say that Michael can easily (and often does) spend an hour answering a single question, with the depth and detail that only someone who clearly has direct knowledge and vision can do in order to give me a correct and deep understanding, transmitting his insights and knowledge to me. Who does that? In my many years of living in retreat learning from dozens of teachers I am pretty sure that not very many teachers can and I've never met one who takes the time or cares enough to actually do so. Michael really is one in a million and is in a league of his own. By helping me understand what the dhamma actually is and what the Buddha actually taught my practice has become much more focused and I understand what the purpose and goals of this practice actually are now and they go far beyond the mainstream concepts of mindfulness and happiness. He helped me understand what "fake Buddhism" is and just how prevalent it is online and even in the most famous Buddhist retreat centers in the US. I was led to believe that the idea of "rebirth" was the stuff of ancient superstition and mysticism and that it wasn't necessary to understand or consider but I know differently now. That completely changed everything in ways that I can't even begin to describe. I now see how much "Wrong View" and "fake dhamma" there is out here that is being passed off as "Buddhism" and how damaging it is to cultivating "Right View" and the Noble Eightfold Path. He taught me to really understand the deep meaning of the Noble Eightfold Path and how important each step is to cultivating our understanding and progress. I feel very fortunate to have met Michael. I am appreciative of every minute we spend together talking about life and the dhamma. I look up to him and he sets a clear example of what is possible when spiritual attainments are actually made and when we have a good teacher and when we are diligent in our practice. He is the real deal and I am really grateful to have him in my life. Sadhu x3!" - Upāsaka Cittadhammo |

"Anagarika Michael is one of the best teachers I've had the pleasure of working with. I respect his rigor, study, and commitment to the Dhamma.
He is very wholesome, almost shockingly so. He is attentive and solid in his Dhamma: he isn't shaky at all in his presentation, and while he is really certain, he respects nuance. His help has been, and continues to be, instrumental in moving me beyond my cutting edge. Before I found Michael, I felt that I was not making the progress that I could've been making. The dharma wasn't penetrating my life as deeply as I thought it would. From the first meeting, Michael's candor and faith in the Buddha's teachings really struck a cord with me. The path is right here and available, we just need to walk it. Through his vast knowledge and experience in Early Buddhist Teachings (EBT) and esoteric Buddhism, Michael makes it clear that awakening is possible in this life. Through his guidance and keen mentorship, I'm confident that I'm well on my way to awakening. What constantly strikes me about Anagārika Michael is that he walks the talk. He clearly communicates the Dhamma in such a way that makes it immediately practical in one's life. His enthusiasm for practice rubs off on you, and over time, I have seen more and more of that practice becoming available to me in every moment; he implores me to see this in our sessions together. His focus on practice in daily life makes Awakening seem much less of a mysterious phenomenon that happens only to the chosen few, but something that is eminently present for those who are sincere in their practice and attuned to the Buddha's teachings — of which Michael has a vast knowledge of. What is unique about Michael is his instruction on using reflection and contemplation as tools for insight. He states that although meditation practice is useful, what really cuts through toward insight is one's willingness to clearly see the defilements that arise in our a day-to-day interactions, the affronts to our egos that we constantly feel a need to protect, and the ignorance that drives us to act compulsively and mindlessly. It is through examining our day-to-day interactions with the world, and choosing a path that leads to harmony and happiness rather than toward miring ourselves deeper into delusion, that makes the difference in one's practice. Through working with Anagārika Michael, this has become clear to me and my practice continues to clarify due to the recognition of the importance of using every opportunity to practice. I wholly recommend Michael to any practitioner who sincerely wishes to experience the fruits of Dhamma practice. I wholeheartedly recommend Michael Turner as a teacher. He’s like a mirror. He’s really direct in showing how one can get in their own way when it comes to realizing happiness and freedom for oneself. Shorty after meeting Michael, I realized he’s the real deal — he constantly practices what he speaks about. He refers to the foundations of the noble 8 fold path, the 4 noble truths, the 5 hindrances, etc. He’s also very big on sīla as it is a necessary foundation for calm and insight. He’s very serious about the ending of suffering and dissatisfaction. He's also a big softy and uses good positive humor." - Chappell Isom, M.Ed, Counselor Education |

"The opportunity to work with Michael is truly a blessing. He's intelligent, kind, direct, wise, relatable, and also very funny! He's the most qualified person I've ever met for this kind of role.
He tailors his teaching style based on my Myers-Briggs personality type (INFP), and that goes a long way. He understands how I communicate, so he allows me to be myself. He's a great listener (and certainly, also a great speaker). I appreciate how he looks at things long-term; there is no sense of rushing the process. He allows me to work at my own pace, but will still compassionately voice his concerns when he notices missteps to course-correct. If you're a fellow truth seeker, Michael will give you a supportive environment to develop those aspirations. This is a precious opportunity; you are very fortunate to have found his work. Thank you Michael." - Jason Splatt, Cullinary Supervisor |

"I must note how much Anagārika Pasannacitta Michael's care and thoughtful one-size-does-not-fill-all approach is noticed and appreciated. I most certainly find my time spent learning from him to be of value. I wish I had considered moving on to Michael from my previous teacher earlier."

"Anagarika Mike is an exceptional teacher. I felt like I was in a boring rut with my meditation and was thinking about giving it up. I am glad I didn't. With Mike's help I learned that meditation and dharma go deeper than I ever imagined and how I can use them to practice my off-the-cushion ability to take a step back when a judgement or a strong emotion suddenly arrives. He taught me how to "recognize, reduce, and replace", and I can see my afflictions coming now, as if I see it all from a distance and I no longer react to my anger and frustration which too often had drawn me into conflicts over and over again.
Because he taught me how to really counter my negative afflictions by using the dharma instead of just knowing it, I can now see the connection between meditating and everything else in my life, they are not separate, they are connected. He really helped me understand that. It all works now and I am getting closer. He says it's like a super power and I agree. I am also learning to smile again thanks to Pasannacitta Mike. People say I don't frown as much any more which is great. Years of anger management couldn't do what a few months of dharma practice with Mike have done for me. Thanks Anagarika Mike!" - Andy D., Data Center Operations Director |

"Thanks to Michael, my practices do something now! I didn't know that I should be focusing to actually learn concentration. No one actually told me that. Duh. Just be mindful they said. He showed me how! With his help I became more aware of how my thoughts work. He is very good at explaining this mind of mine, the logical mind and the inner mind. I understand now the massive impact that my thoughts have on my body and my emotions and Michael's kindness and his deep expertise across all of the Buddhist subjects is clear and he helped me to learn how to pay much more attention to what's going on in my head as it happens without all the judgement and to apply the "appropriate antidotes" from the Buddhist practices that we talked about.
I learned to cope differently, to look into the situation, to manage stressful moments in a healthier way (speaking in public for example ...) I don't resist it any more. I've learned how to do this nearly all the time now, with so little effort thanks to him. Now I try to understand my thoughts so I have better control over where my mind takes me. I am making breakthroughs and remarkable progress. It's unbelievable and I feel like I'm becoming a new person! I wish I knew all of this years ago. If you are looking for a caring, kind, and skilled Buddhist therapist or life coach, you can stop right here, you've found the best!" - Jennifer E., Information Technology Manager |

"There's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path/understanding it. Fortunately for any student of Michael, he has done both, which provides immense value to anyone he talks to.
If you're trying to learn anything, it's of the utmost importance that you are able to know what's correct and what's not correct, without this knowledge you can get stuck going down wrong paths and learning incorrect knowledge. Michael is able to help you understand things and still let you learn it with your own perspective and apply it to your life in the way that only you know how while he course corrects it and helps you gain more knowledge as you go on. At the end of the day I came into this path to become happier me. Through Michael, I'm realizing that what matters the most is being kind and compassionate to others, and that being kind to others is ultimately being kind to myself. As I’m still very much a beginner to the Buddhist Path, my life revolves around worldly experiences. Michael has been very helpful by teaching me the foundations of Buddhism and the complexity/depth behind them while also helping me practically with issues that I would run into throughout my personal day-to-day activity. When it comes to working with Michael, an important factor is that you personally take the time to work on what he recommends throughout the week and study, so that when you go into the session a discussion can unfold on what you’ve already contemplated. This way he can help you understand and refine the information that you are taking in, also allowing discussion to unfold on the nuance of the topic. As I’ve started to work with Michael I’ve noticed a lot of personal change in terms of perspective. I view the world from a drastically different lens than before. A lens that is more understanding, and compassionate, and ultimately leading me down a path of seeing things for how they are. Buddhism is more complex than I could have ever imagined, you need someone to take things slow and help you build the groundwork to figure it out. From this perspective, I feel like Michael is good at taking things step by step, being kind and patient as you learn, which I view as vital to building an unshakeable foundation that can hold up. Michael really understands Buddhism and has a lot to offer that you can benefit from by working with him. Ultimately I would recommend Michael Turner to anyone who is looking to grow as a Buddhist practitioner." - Abou Ali, Coach |

"With Michael help I finally learned the process of being a practicing buddhist instead of just being a buddhist. His understanding of the Buddha teachings and his ability to explain how to practically apply it to my life have been nothing short of life changing. Even better, he worked with me to start using the dharma off the cushion which changed everything, it's like seeing the world for the first time. I see the world differently now, and there is a space between "me" and everything else that gives me a deep sense of freedom. Now when I sense the "seeds" of a negative emotion, I can actually stop what I am doing in that moment and listen to what is happening to me at that very moment - and now I've learned to not resist that feeling - but to face it and work with it and turn it into practice and so it dissipates gently and quickly. Now my dharma practice is working in really amazing ways.
The quality of my life and my practice have improved beyond my expectations. My appreciation for Michael's unbelievable skills, insights, and understanding can't be expressed. My life is different now. Everyone has noticed that I'm different, more patient, more compassionate. I’m really happy to be able to move closer towards my peace and my well-being." - Ella Yang, Management Consultant |

"Michael is an excellent therapist and coach. My sessions with him were truly an invaluable experience. His deeply intuitive nature and his keen insights into Buddhism, the dharma, and the business world directly helped me make many positive steps to advance my professional career and my personal life in ways that I wouldn't have expected from a meditation or Buddhist coach and he has become a trusted mentor and counsellor to me. I can easily recommend him to anyone even remotely interested in life, work, or Buddhist mentoring or life coaching. I am forever grateful for the time we have spent together."

"Thank you for everything Michael. I never thought using your practical dharma techniques in my practice and in my life would bring me so much "progress"! I gained positivity, confidence, and it has changed my outlook on myself, my family, and on life. You helped me actually understand the point of using dharma instead of just reading and knowing it and to use it as part of my meditation and I became a lot more aware of where my thoughts are taking me, what to do with them and to do things that I didn't think were possible. You completely fixed my practice and I am more relaxed, more free. I go to people now and I am much more accessible when approached. You literally taught me how to smile. I can breathe again and handle my stress and problems much better now."

"Michael was invaluable in helping me continue my path of learning and practicing Buddhism. When I first started exploring Buddhism on my own, I was finding it difficult to wrap my head around all the various traditions, teachings, and practices. Michael did an amazing job helping me refine my practice and tie together the broader picture of Buddhism.
Beyond this, Michael is kind, compassionate, and provided great materials to work with and contemplate. He is well-structured in his approach and very knowledgeable. I'd highly recommend him to anyone who is looking to start or deepen their practice!" - John S., Entrepreneur |

"I feel very lucky to have met Michael and to have him as a Buddhist teacher. Michael is highly knowledgeable and it is obvious that he embodies what he teaches. He is as warm amd compassionate as he is intelligent. I have grown tremendously in the six months we have been working together so far, in ways that would not have been possible if it were not for his guidance. He is skilled at seeing what is needed and how to direct progress depending on my level of awareness. I highly recommend upasaka Michael Turner as a teacher or coach no matter where you are on the path. It is rare to find this level of quality in a teacher."
- Erica Tait, Psychotherapist and Practice Owner |

"I was dealing with some really heavy stuff and I stopped being able to practice and to use the dharma and I stopped meditating. A coworker recommended Anagarika Michael for some buddhist counselling. I definitely needed some of that. And what a great recommendation it was. He is compassionate, kind, and patient but he is also direct and doesn't let me make any excuses or buy into any of my own stories. That is really helpful and keeps me honest.
He helped me get in touch with perspective again and he helped me use the stress I was feeling as practice not as an obstacle to it. Not always easy to do but he helped me understand that buddhism provides a literal framework for resilience and happiness and he helped me find new ways to use my dharma and meditation that worked. We got back on the mat together and I learned a lot from him. I would suggest him to anybody who is having a hard time." - Mike Posner, Software Developer |

"Michael is an exceptional Buddhist teacher. He is attentive, wise, charismatic, and profoundly thoughtful. He has an incredible ability to adapt his teachings to meet me exactly where I am on my path (a curious blend of being a novice who has some advanced insights), while providing encouragement and support that have been especially impactful as I navigate the early stages of my practice.
His deep understanding of the Dharma and unwavering dedication to his teachings shine through in every session. What stands out most to me is his commitment to fostering independence rather than reliance, empowering me to engage with the teachings at my own pace and integrate them into my daily experiences. I always look forward to our weekly meetings, where his insights, thoughtfully assigned readings, and suggested contemplations consistently offer fresh clarity and perspective. I feel incredibly fortunate to have Michael Turner as my teacher and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking guidance on their spiritual journey." - Natalie C., Program Manager |

"Like so many others have said, Upasaka Michael is an amazing coach and a compassionate and kind teacher, I wasn't expecting that from reading his blogs. I am lucky to have crossed his path and reached out to him because his presence and experience is just what I personally needed.
There's no doubt that the "eye of the dhamma" has opened inside of him. His vast knowledge of buddhism and his incredibly deep understanding of the dhamma makes clear to me that which was so much more difficult before working with Michael. He teaches with strength, confidence, clarity, and a conviction that is without a trace of doubt in the notions of rebirth, kamma, and nibbana giving me real confidence in my ability that I too can attain the state that is free of the fetter of doubt and enter into the stream as so many of his other students have before me. He helped me understand what is and what isn't "true dhamma" and he steered me away from the misguidance of mainstream western buddhism, which I didn't realize had been such a blocker to me making actual progress in buddhism for all of these years. I have never met anyone who so clearly demonstrates the understanding and insight of an actual awakened person and streamenterer and I am surprised, pleased, and grateful at his sudden appearance in my life. The progress that I have made since meeting him has been nothing short of amazing and life changing. I am so appreciative to have Michael as a teacher and as a personal success coach." - Andrew Smith, Corporate Financial Officer |
