Like most people, for as long as you can remember, you have likely worked very hard trying to find success and happiness for yourself and to avoid pain, loss, and suffering; but what do you have to show for all those efforts?  You still experience disappointment after disappointment.  You are still subject to the sway of your emotions and you are still under the influence of an unruly mind that is constantly thinking about things that destroy your sense of peace and happiness.  You are still suffering.

Hello.  ​My name is Michael Turner.
​I used to be like you.
​Finding stable happiness to be just out of reach.

​​I used to be a successful Fortune 200 Californian businessperson and Board member living in Manhattan; an angry one, an impatient one, and a frustrated one.  Despite my intelligence and hard work, and despite my professional achievements and financial success, I suffered greatly on the inside as a result of my unskilful ways and my self-defeating approaches to other people and to my problems.

I spent years working with therapists and professionals trying to overcome the behaviours, habits, and thoughts that got in the way of my happiness, but their methods and systems just didn't work for me.  So, I found a better way — a practical philosophical approach that actually works and one that offers genuine and measurable results.  
I became calmer, kinder, and happier; and then I became a "formerly angry business person" who experienced unbridled professional success, emotional resilience, and unshakeable happiness despite living in an increasingly angrier and more intolerant and divided world; and now, I guide people in recognising and overcoming the personal obstacles that get in the way of their success and happiness.

These days I am a highly-respected and sought-after Buddhism teacher and trainer, yet I remain available as a powerfully transformative personal coach and professional development expert for those who don't specifically identify with Buddhism but find themselves keenly interested in mindful living and experiencing contentment, yet struggle in their efforts to genuinely cultivate a more peaceful, harmonious, and joyful co-existence with themselves and others.

The people I work with generally aren't looking for "life" coaching.
They know what they want to do with their lives.
But their goals continue to be just out of reach.

​Like those who seek out personal fitness trainers or professional golf pros to help them step up their game, the skills and benefit that I offer are in working with those who are looking to level-up by overcoming the negative thoughts, unwanted habits, and harmful behaviours that get in the way and have been holding them back from the level of success and happiness that they work so hard to experience.

Much of what I do can be considered cognitive behavioural coaching, which is a discussion-based coaching framework focused on leveraging the neuroplasticity of your brain; understanding and restructuring how your thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes affect your feelings and actions.  ​Together we will help you develop real skills and strengths to finally master and overcome your problems and frustrations.

In that capacity, we will work together to:

  • Identify the often hidden root-cause of your stress, which fuels the steady and unshakeable undercurrent of discontentment or "wanting" that you feel;
  • Learn practical techniques to overcome the problems and challenges that keep you from the wellspring of happiness and general sense of safety which already exists within you;
  • Learn, leverage, and integrate a traditionally mindfulness-based approach to everyday stress-reduction, resilience, and problem-management;
  • Explore ways to more deeply integrate self-compassion into your day-to-day life and into your interactions with friends, family, and colleagues.​

Learning how to mindfully use technology in a technologically-saturated world.

  • ​Using technology to make progress toward physical ease and peace-of-mind rather than away from it.
  • Making room for greater work-life balance in an increasingly more achievement-oriented and burnout work culture.

An approach to learning how to be content and present in everyday life, regardless of your conditions, situations, environments, or interactions with others.

  • Recognising the habits that negatively affect your moods and create stress, worry, depression, frustration, and insecurity.
  • Taming anger, impatience, fear, conflict, anxiety, self-doubt, anguish, harsh self-talk, and physical pain; in addition to all other forms of day-to-day irritations, aggravations, and obstacles.
  • Learning how to work with and around difficult people who push your buttons and test your capacity to be patient, calm, and understanding.
  • Improving your relationships with others and setting boundaries that support mutual harmony, trust, and communication.
  • ​Working through quality-of-life altering personal issues such as isolation and end-of-life concerns.​

And finally, we will work on starting or leveraging a basic meditation practice; introducing the benefits of Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) into your daily life to reduce your stress and to increase your general sense of peace and safety.

  • Relationship Coaching — Reviewing difficult and unwanted situations and interactions that you find yourself in with others to help you fortify, improve, repair, or restore your relationship with your partner, spouse, family, friends, colleagues, managers, employees, neighbours, and loved ones.  This is about reframing unhelpful narratives, creating healthy boundaries, not over-committing yourself, and realising when you are sacrificing your happiness (or someone else's happiness) in ways that do more harm than good.  It's also about understanding when you may be wrong, or when to stop defending or "being right" when you could otherwise cultivate harmonious compromise, and how to do that without feeling a sense of loss, embarrassment, or shame.  This may also mean learning skilful ways to distance yourself, or even ending, toxic and unhealthy relationships and how to do that safely and compassionately.
  • Buddhist Counselling — I offer Buddhism-based guidance for individuals and couples who are specifically looking to better leverage their Buddhist or mindfulness practices and genuinely integrate and apply those lovingly-kind and compassionately-present techniques into their daily lives to address the many real-world problems and challenges that get in the way of their peace-of-mind, happiness, and sense of safety and contentment.
